Cancer Rehabilitation: The Importance of Exercise & Physiotherapy

Cancer is the most prevalent, disabling, and costly health care condition. Treatment methods such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy can cause toxicity in the body resulting in mental and physical fatigue, amongst many other side effects.

How Can Physiotherapy Help?
Many individuals post-cancer treatment and surgery are left wondering how to move forward and progress with their exercise tolerance, mobility, and strength. Physiotherapy and exercise have been shown to help manage the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation therapy.

Cancer-related surgeries can affect the muscle, nerves, and soft tissue surrounding the surgical area. Physiotherapy can provide manual therapy techniques, prescribe exercises, and discuss strategies to target those specific areas.

It will provide information on different types of cancers and how physiotherapy and exercise can help you return to the activities and hobbies that you enjoy!

Melissa Doerksen is certified in Rehabilitation Strategies for Patients with Cancer. Her passion is to provide individuals going through cancer treatment with the strategies, education, and create client-centered programs to improve function and quality of life.
