Osteoarthritis is described as a joint disease that causes the breakdown of the surface (cartilage) of a joint in the body. Think of your joint like an orange, the peel is the cartilage of the joint that protects the fruit, and the underlying fruit is the bone. As you take away the peel of the orange, you expose the fruit that is beneath. This is similar to your joint, as you wear away the cartilage of your joint the bone is exposed. This breakdown of the surface or cartilage can cause pain, swelling, stiffness, and decreased mobility which can often lead to joint replacement surgery.
These issues can make everyday activities such as getting out of bed in the morning, putting on socks, getting up from a chair, or starting up an exercise program very difficult. Unfortunately, osteoarthritis is not curable but there are many ways to manage your symptoms and improve your function.
Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis with approximately 3.9 million Canadians over the age of 20 living with diagnosed osteoarthritis. In the last 5 years, volumes of hip and knee replacement surgeries have increased by ~17% and are expected to continue to rise. With the COVID-19 pandemic delaying surgery dates, now is the time to learn how to manage osteoarthritis. Two very common areas of osteoarthritis are the knee and hip joints.
Not everyone has osteoarthritis, yet they are experiencing some type of hip pain. Some other common hip issues are impingement, bursitis, IT band syndrome, piriformis syndrome and more.
In this webinar you will learn about osteoarthritis and how physiotherapy can help you can get back to doing the activities that you enjoy! You will also briefly learn about some of the other hip pathologies and how physiotherapy can help with them as well.

Osteoarthritis: Causes and Pain Management
